SeaLeft FAQ
May 11, 2018
Earlier this year I started taking courses to brush up my business analyst skills. This was done with an eye towards getting certified by the International Institute of Business Analysis, which requires that a certification examine be written, among other things. The courses covered a lot of material written in fairly lengthy “learner manuals”. Reading and rereading those documents and even taking notes to summarize them in your own words only gets you so far in prepping. There comes a point where the words all blur together and you lose focus. Hence the need to make the study prep more interactive.
Some years ago I wrote a simple quizzing application to help for other courses I was taking at the time. This week I dusted that application off, fired it up, and lo and behold it still worked. I thought such a program might be useful for other people (that and I got so wrapped up in creating the BA quizzes for it I didn’t have much time to spend on game making this week) so here it is, SeaLeft FAQ.
For SeaLeft FAQ you start by creating your own quizzes with any simple text editor, such as Notepad. Questions in the quizzes are all multiple choice and can be given anywhere from two to six answers (with only one of those answers marked as correct, naturally). When you run the quiz in SeaLeft FAQ it mixes the questions into random order and then for each question it mixes the answers into random order. That way, whenever a question gets asked you have to read the answers rather than developing “muscle memory” that tells you the correct answer to a given question is always answer three, for example.
The application is also set up so that if you answer a question wrong, it will be reshuffled into the set of remaining questions to be asked again until you get it right. That way you get more exposure to those areas you struggle with. However, if that’s not your thing then you can always turn that ability off.
SeaLeft FAQ also tracks and graphs your performance. Every time you take a quiz it records how successful you were in answering the questions. Hopefully you’ll see improvement over time as you get more familiar with whatever material you’re studying.
I can’t provide any of the quizzes I’ve made for my BA courses as they’re all based on copyrighted material. Consequently SeaLeft FAQ doesn’t come with any quizzes out of the box. But the included manual describes how to prepare your own quizzes. Hopefully, it will be a nice useful little application for someone to help them learn. You can download SeaLeft FAQ from the Freeware page or handily from the links below.
