[Richard Hoover]Hello, World!

November 7, 2014

Hello and welcome. I’m Richard Hoover and I started SeaLeft Studios because I’ve wanted to make my stories, computer software, and various other creative endeavours available to, well, the world.

I grew up as an avid reader and computer game player. On the reading front, it was a lot of Star Trek and Star Wars with a healthy sprinkling of classic science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and horror. Over in the digital domain, I was always attracted to the classic computer adventure games of the 1980s and 90s. Things like Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Loom, Secret of Monkey Island, Space Quest, King’s Quest, and Gabriel Knight. It was the latter interest that propelled me into both computer programming and art disciplines, with the hopes of one day creating my own games.

At heart, I consider myself a storyteller. While I worked professionally as a programmer—then software analyst, project coordinator, and finally product manager—at a regular eight to five office job, I also developed my writing and storytelling skills over many years.

And now? I'm ready. (I hope!)

After a successful software career working for someone else, I'm ready to head out on my own. SeaLeft Studios will become the home to my creative works—both existing and those yet to come.

At the time of writing, the doors on the website are just opening and the paint is still wet. Even so, there are a few cubbyholes to poke around in:

  • Blog – What you're reading now. A place for my general ramblings and news updates. Always updated on Fridays. Except when it isn't.
  • Satin & Sutherland – Satin and Sutherland are the main characters in my first “for publication” novel, which will be coming to fine e-tailers before the end of the year. A gearhead and a con man, Satin and Sutherland adventure across Canada in the late 1800s. A Canada powered by chromosphorite steam engines, connected by telecommunications carried on light, and plagued by prairie pirates.
  • The Cubes – Cubes is a web comic I author and illustrate over on SeaLeft’s sister site. It features a group of anthropomorphic characters dealing with the utterly bizarre business world. Pop on by the full site at www.CubesComic.com to read more.
  • Freeware – I’m a computer programmer by trade and I’ve made a number of software tools for my own purposes. Find them here completely free to use.

It’s a modest start to be sure. More updates and additions will be coming in the weeks and months and (hopefully) years to come. Check back often to see what new weird and wonderful things may pop up.

For now, come on in, look around, and enjoy.
