Bridging the Gap

December 3, 2021

Last time, I wrote about having to reinstate the room of Captain Windwhistler aboard the ship in Sleuthhounds: Cruise. This was to fix an issue that allowed the simple bypassing of a good chunk of the game. Changes of that nature tend to have a ripple effect and this one was no exception. One area where this was felt was on the bridge of the ship; a room that I’d previously finalized.

The bridge, as finalized the first time, had windows facing in all directions. In addition to providing a nice splash of colour with the blue ocean in the background, the rearmost windows were involved in an optional puzzle sequence. That all changed with the reintroduction of the captain’s cabin.

Captain Windwhistler’s room, as per the original design of the game, has been added adjoining the bridge again. It seemed unbecoming of an officer to have to climb through a window to reach his room, so the rear wall of the bridge has been updated to have a door for access.

Of course, that also means that the puzzle sequence involving the former window had to change. It’s still intact in the game, but now it occurs in Windwhistler’s cabin itself. It couldn’t be swapped to another window on the bridge because it’s a puzzle that involves the specific geography of the ship. That’s to say, the window needs to overlook the pool room from the deck below. And the pool room is most definitely aft of the bridge/captain’s cabin, not to the side.

I have a few last things to tweak with both Windwhistler’s room and the bridge. Otherwise, things are very much shipshape again and I’ll be moving on to the next room to finalize soon.
